Monday was the first day in many many days that I was finally able to wear a funky short sleeved shirt for a short time during the evening and not freeze to death. Copenhagen is starting to like me I think. All you really need to impress me is a little color and some sunshine. It's getting warmer, the days are getting clearer, and the love is growing stronger. The city is completely different with nice weather too. The Danes come out of their black closets and sit around to enjoy the sun and frolick in public spaces; it's so lovely and it's so contagious. People sun bathe and hang out in every space they can find: on stairs, on top and around benches, in the middle of the stone-slabbed plaza, hanging their feet in the harbor, in between streets alleys, above balconies and under bridges... So I did as Danes do and threw school to the wind. I headed outside and hung out under the beautiful blue sky.
Tuesday I did the same. I am so glad spring is coming soon because I definitely can get used to this real quick. I decided to pick a busy corner to sit, people-watch, and sketch. You can see the drawing I did below. My technique is just like the vibrant life of the square. I like to sit there and let the pen wonder alongside my eyes. Sometimes there is perspective, sometimes its unproportional, other times its just contour lines and others just volumes hinting at what architecture could be. At the end I go back and doodle into the shadows. I don't premeditate drawings a lot. For me, drawing is almost therapeutic. It is a medium that lets me explore the life unfolding before me visually while understanding physical spatial/social relationships. I liked it a lot, I hadn't had the time to draw in a long time. I'm not quite fond of pen but this time it was just right to me. I liked the finished product.
The square was so lively too. There was a singer hitting so many blue-grass songs out of the park. Countless couples would come sit on the fountain and feed each other froyo. I would laugh because it romantic yet so cliche. Kids would walk by with multiple shopping bags. Tourist would walk past by me grasping the pretty scene and holding up their camera. Bike bells rang. The clock of the church would ring every hour. The pigeons would take flight every time they were scared. At one point some random stranger stopped above me to peak into my drawing (shame on me for being pretty much sitting down in the middle of the square). She walked away but then came back to ask me if she could take a picture of my drawing. I held it up and smiled. She snapped a picture. It was a very cute moment specially because I don't really think I am an out-of-this-world artist yet it was enough to catch someone's eye #storyofmylife. It's weird to think that she is going to go home and look a that picture sometime... and it will be me awkwardly smiling in between pictures of jugglers, a human statue and the singing girl! Some time later a couple stopped to peak too. I said hi, politely talked to them for a little and continued. When I deemed it all done I got up so satisfied at my day and headed home. Day conquered.
